Optical Splitter Loss Calculator
Calculate insertion loss for passive optical splitters in PON and distribution networks.
PLC Splitter Insertion Loss (Typical)
| Split Ratio | Theoretical | Typical Max | Uniformity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:2 | 3.0 dB | 3.7 dB | 0.6 dB |
| 1:4 | 6.0 dB | 7.2 dB | 0.8 dB |
| 1:8 | 9.0 dB | 10.5 dB | 1.0 dB |
| 1:16 | 12.0 dB | 13.5 dB | 1.2 dB |
| 1:32 | 15.0 dB | 17.0 dB | 1.5 dB |
| 1:64 | 18.0 dB | 21.0 dB | 2.5 dB |
Optical Splitter Theory
Split Loss Formula
Theoretical Loss = 10 * log10(N) dB
Total Loss = Theoretical + Excess Loss
Where N = number of output ports
Total Loss = Theoretical + Excess Loss
Where N = number of output ports
Power is divided equally among output ports. Excess loss accounts for manufacturing imperfections, typically 0.5-3 dB depending on split ratio and technology.
